What does it take to be a Data Analyst?

If you want to be a data analyst you have to know what companies are looking for. Looking through some position postings I came across a few common denominators. One important factor is education. Every position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in some form of economics, computer science, statistics, engineering, etc. If you have a masters degree they'll love you even more.

It's not just about your educational achievements though. There are different skill sets like being well versed in SQL languages and big data frameworks, having experience with Python (a powerful open source language) or R and a sound knowledge of statistical principles. To be considered you have to prove that you are able to present data in a compelling way and convey complex findings in a clear, concise and credible manner. To survive you'll have to be a person who finds thinking outside of the box and curiosity to be important in analyzing data.

If you want to learn more about what defines and makes a stellar data analyst head over to Carlo Fiore's post on Defining the Wizard a.k.a. Data Scientists.
